KPS Studios Revolutionizes Live Football Coverage in India with Matrox Monarch EDGE
Overview
Kolkata-based KPS Studios is redefining the live sports broadcasting landscape in India. With a team of 78 creative and technical professionals, the studio is among the nation’s first to implement a full-fledged remote production (REMI) workflow—one that includes multi-HD capabilities and enables highly efficient on-location setup.
In late 2024 KPS Studios began proofs of concept (POCs) with multiple vendors. At the time, Lamhas Satellite Services Limited (Lamhas), a leader in comprehensive end-to-end video solutions provider recommended the Matrox Monarch EDGE encoders and decoders to them. Since February 2025, KPS Studios has relied exclusively on Monarch EDGE to power their REMI productions of major football tournaments, including the I-League, Indian Women’s League, Santosh Trophy, and the iconic Durand Cup. KPS Studios was entrusted with delivering live coverage of these matches, primarily the Durand Cup and I-League matches for Sony Sports and other OTT channels. KPS Studios manages the REMI workflow to their master control rooms in Kolkata, where the live production is executed, and then contributes the final program feed to Sony for distribution to viewers across India.
The result? More matches covered, more flexibility, and a dramatic 35% reduction in operational costs.
The Challenge

In a country as vast and dynamic as India, live production companies face enormous logistical hurdles. From venue-to-venue travel to on-site infrastructure, the traditional OB (outside broadcast) model is both expensive and time-consuming. KPS Studios needed a solution that would help them:
- Reduce travel and setup costs
- Cover more events in a single day
- Maintain high production quality across venues
- Scale efficiently while using fewer resources
- Rival the production value and quality associated with traditional OB vans
And, with a growing demand for HD content and multi-camera setups, they needed a remote production solution that could handle the technical requirements without overcomplicating deployment.
The Solution: Matrox Monarch EDGE
KPS Studios turned to the Monarch EDGE remote production encoders and decoders as the backbone of their new workflow. Each football match is covered using eight cameras strategically placed throughout the field. For each event, a team of 12 personnel is sent on-site: including eight camera operators and technical crew members responsible for camera setup, microphone placements, tally, talkback, and configuring the remote production encoding and transmission. All other production operations—from video switching, graphics, audio mixing, and instant replays to final broadcast deliverables—are handled remotely from KPS Studios’ headquarters in Kolkata.
To support simultaneous productions, KPS has established three dedicated master control rooms (MCRs) at their facility. This setup allows them to produce up to three matches concurrently from separate venues, with full coordination and control centralized in-house. This hybrid deployment model not only maximizes efficiency but also ensures consistent production quality across all events.
Setup time per match? Just four hours—a fraction of what was previously required using traditional OB workflows. In that short window, the KPS field crew arrives on site, unpacks and deploys eight cameras around the field, sets up audio infrastructure, and configures the Monarch EDGE encoders. This includes establishing a dedicated IP link back to their headquarters in Kolkata, integrating tally and talkback systems, and performing full system checks before the event begins. Each element is verified through pre-event testing, ensuring seamless live delivery and minimizing the risk of technical disruptions.
Why Matrox Monarch EDGE?
When evaluating solutions, KPS Studios had several key criteria: video quality, ease of use, communication tools, and reliability. Monarch EDGE checked all the boxes.
1. Tally and Talkback:
Real-time communication between the field crew and studio is essential in live sports production. Monarch EDGE’s built-in tally and talkback features play a vital role in keeping everything synchronized. The tally system clearly indicates camera status with preview (green) and live (red) signals, ensuring that camera operators know exactly when their feed is being used on-air or queued up—helping them stay focused and reducing on-camera mistakes.
Meanwhile, the talkback functionality provides a direct audio link between the master control room (MCR) and the field crew. Directors and producers can issue instructions in real time—whether it's asking for a specific shot, cueing a change in framing, or coordinating with the on-site technical staff. This two-way communication helps maintain a high level of production discipline, speeds up decision-making, and ensures that both the creative and technical teams are working in perfect sync, even across great distances.
2. High-Quality Video Transport:
Monarch EDGE ensures visually lossless video transport—even when bitrates are constrained. This was critical for KPS Studios, who need every frame delivered to the live viewers to reflect the emotion and intensity of what’s happening at the stadium.
3. Web-Based UI for Ease of Use:
With teams deployed at multiple sites, the simplicity of setup and control is paramount. Monarch EDGE’s intuitive web interface allows the technicians at the venue or at KPS Studios headquarters to configure devices quickly, monitor stream status, and troubleshoot issues without requiring extensive training.
Results
Since deploying Monarch EDGE across their remote production fleet, KPS Studios has achieved:
- 35% reduction in operational costs, including travel, accommodation, and equipment transport.
- Three simultaneous productions per day, multiplying their capacity and revenue potential.
- Higher production consistency, with centralized control rooms ensuring standardized quality.
- Faster setup times, allowing for more agile deployment and tighter production schedules.
What used to be an elaborate and costly OB setup has transformed into a nimble, efficient, and scalable model—paving the way for future expansion.

Looking Ahead
With their success in football broadcasting, KPS Studios is eyeing additional sports and entertainment events to bring into their remote production fold. The flexibility and scalability of Monarch EDGE mean they’re well-positioned to meet increasing demand without a proportional rise in costs.
“As pioneers in remote production in India, we needed a partner who shared our vision for high-quality, efficient, and modern broadcasting,” said Rishi Mehra, Chief Executive Officer. “Matrox Monarch EDGE has become the core of our remote production strategy—and we’re only getting started.”
When asked about Lamhas’ role in recommending Matrox Monarch EDGE, Ajay Jain, CEO of Lamhas commented, “Matrox Video is a globally-renowned brand known for manufacturing high-quality broadcast products, especially with unique capabilities tailored for remote production. We at Lamhas are privileged to partner with Matrox Video to bring these advanced solutions to the Indian market. For over two decades, Lamhas has been committed to delivering innovative and reliable solutions to Indian broadcasters and production companies.”
Beginning in August 2025, KPS Studios plans to leverage SMPTE ST 2110 workflows to further modernize their infrastructure and increase interoperability across systems. This shift will allow for even more flexible, scalable, and IP-native workflows, helping them seamlessly integrate with broadcast partners and expand into cloud-based production environments. In parallel, the team is also preparing to roll out full 4K production workflows, enabling them to meet the growing viewer demand for ultra-high-definition content across both traditional and digital platforms.
Matrox Monarch EDGE is helping KPS Studios reshape the live production model in India—one match at a time.
