Matrox ORIGIN

Software-Defined Infrastructure for Building Dynamic Live Media Facilities

Broadcast and media professionals are under pressure to create more content for a fragmented audience—all with fewer resources than ever before. The promise of IT and cloud technologies offers a path forward, but traditional broadcast workflows don’t align with how IT systems are designed to operate. Matrox ORIGIN bridges this gap. Instead of simply replicating legacy approaches, it empowers you to run IT infrastructure as it was meant to be used, unlocking unprecedented adaptability, agility, and scalability. By leveraging the massive R&D investments of the IT industry, Matrox ORIGIN enables innovation beyond the limits of traditional broadcast, delivering a system that doesn’t just match legacy capabilities—but surpasses them.

Matrox ORIGIN

What is Matrox ORIGIN?

Matrox ORIGIN is an asynchronous media framework designed to empower developers to build software-defined broadcast infrastructure on generic IT equipment—whether on-premises or in the public cloud. It replaces bespoke hardware interconnected with clocked, synchronous protocols like ST 2110 or SDI with applications composed of distributed media services operating in a COTS environment and interconnected via an uncompressed content transfer fabric.

Matrox ORIGIN combines this unique architecture with comprehensive control capabilities, decoupling media processing from the constraints of underlying hardware to deliver exceptional scalability, agility, and redundancy. It enables low-latency, resilient, and highly dynamic media workflows suitable for deployments of any size—including large-scale Tier 1 operations—while allowing best-of-breed component selection.

For media service developers, Matrox ORIGIN’s SDK provides intuitive APIs for building stateless media functions with powerful control interfaces, enabling developers to create services once and repurpose them for various use cases.

For control application developers, Matrox ORIGIN’s REST API offers a powerful, high-level interface for building high-performance and scalable media applications without requiring low-level broadcast development expertise.

Matrox ORIGIN key benefits

Easy, frame-accurate control

Matrox ORIGIN introduces a control mechanism that enables seamless dynamic changes to workflows across distributed systems. Its built-in routing function ensures clean switching through the content fabric with guaranteed AV synchronization—allowing media to be routed anywhere, regardless of signal path or system scale.

Horizontally-scalable architecture

Matrox ORIGIN is designed for unbounded horizontal scaling. Whether deployed on a single host or across multiple hosts and availability zones, media services can scale dynamically as demands change—without requiring infrastructure redesign.

Low latency

Matrox ORIGIN minimizes latency by leveraging asynchronous interconnects and executing services as fast as your hardware allows. Unlike traditional synchronous systems (e.g., SDI, ST 2110, NDI), these standards are used only for I/O—not as the backbone—delivering ultra-low latency via native uncompressed transport over the network.

Live migration capability

Media services can be migrated in runtime with zero frame loss and without disruption to control systems. Media services can scale out to new compute nodes or be consolidated dynamically for cost efficiency.

Built-in redundancy

Enable redundancy without duplicated cost or additional control overhead. Define the level of resilience by configuring how many identical services run and where. Matrox ORIGIN's redundancy architecture spans multiple AWS availability zones to support mission-critical operations.

Developer-friendly SDKs

Matrox ORIGIN provides tiered SDKs for building both media services and control applications. Its open framework allows you to build or integrate best-of-breed components. Development APIs are available to broadcasters, system integrators, and software vendors.

Development SDKs

Matrox ORIGIN provides two development kits: the Matrox ORIGIN Framework SDK and the Matrox ORIGIN Fabric SDK, giving developers full control over service creation, orchestration, and transport infrastructure.

Matrox ORIGIN Framework

Designed for building full media applications, the Framework SDK provides two APIs:

  • Matrox ORIGIN Control API (HTTPS-based REST interface)
  • Matrox ORIGIN Media Services SDK (C/C++ API for media function development)

Matrox ORIGIN Fabric

Exposes the low-level transport backbone of ORIGIN, enabling advanced use cases that interact directly with the transfer fabric:

  • Matrox ORIGIN Fabric SDK (C/C++ API for direct access to the content transfer fabric)
